Thursday, February 11, 2016 - Roper St. Francis Healthcare physical therapist earns pelvic health certification

Roper St. Francis Healthcare physical therapist Trina Kiernan is the first person in South Carolina to receive a Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy (CAPP) from the American Physical Therapy Association.

Trina has been a pelvic floor physical therapist for 16 years. She worked for two years to earn her certification through the APTA and traveled to Maryland, New York and Oregon for training.

“In Europe and Australia, nearly every woman who has a baby sees a pelvic floor therapist to reeducate the pelvic floor muscles and get them working properly again,” Kiernan said. “Here in the South, we’re proper. No one wants to talk about their bowel and bladder problems but as it becomes more acceptable to talk about, there will be a huge need for pelvic floor physical therapists across the country.”

Trina works with patients at Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital in the Pelvic Health Center and at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in outpatient physical therapy.
