Saturday, September 11, 2021 - Remembering 9/11: a message from our CEO
9/11

This week, our teammates continued to confront the crisis of the moment, the third surge of COVID-19.

What is truly amazing is that all healthcare workers are ALWAYS there when needed.

Today, we pay special respect to so many who were impacted by the Sept. 11 disaster, 20 years ago today. I came to Charleston from Virginia Hospital Center (VHC). Located in Arlington, Va., this was the main hospital where patients were after American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon, killing 125.

This photo above was taken outside of the Emergency Department on that day when doctors, nurses and staff waited in anticipation of saving lives.

To me, this photograph symbolizes more than one hospital ready to serve. This photograph captures the spirit of all healthcare workers who will do whatever it takes to help others.

Today, we thank healthcare workers in Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania for all they did that day. Today, we reflect and remember those who lost their lives and pray for many more who were impacted. Today, we thank our service men and women who have fought to defend our country in the wake of this attack and especially to those who have been injured or have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Finally, today, we celebrate our health care heroes who are responding to the crisis of 2020 and 2021. I am abundantly proud that Roper St. Francis Healthcare is full of teammates who are always ready to rise and save lives during our most trying times and devastating moments.
