Nursing at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is proud to be recognized as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes hospitals that meet rigorous standards of nursing excellence and demonstrate professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. Only two percent of hospitals have earned this designation three times, and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is the first in South Carolina to achieve a third Magnet designation. Magnet recognition provides benefits to healthcare organizations and their communities, such as: improved patient outcomes, lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates, higher job satisfaction, and lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital was first designated as a Magnet hospital in 2010 and again in 2015 and 2020.

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital

Shared governance

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital Nursing has a shared governance that involves more direct care nurses in decision-making regarding professional practice, research, quality and patient safety and professional advancement. Representatives from unit-based councils participate on hospital-wide councils, which in turn report their discussions and recommendations to the Leadership Advisory Council. These councils are very active and some are interprofessional, tackling such issues as nursing policies, evidence-based practice and process improvement, quality and patient safety, nursing research, specialty certification and continuing education, informatics, RN turnover rates and retention activities and recognition of our nurses’ achievements.

The Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital Nursing Excellence Professional Practice Model is an illustration of how our nurses practice, collaborate, communicate and develop professionally to provide the highest quality of care. The roots of the model’s tree represent the foundation of our nursing practice, the trunk embodies our nurses’ attributes and the foliage indicates that we are always reaching toward the best outcomes for our patients and nurses.
