Mammography

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is about 1 in 8. Roper St. Francis Healthcare believes early detection is the best way to find breast cancer in its earliest, most curable stages. If you need further treatment, Roper St. Francis Cancer Care provides a full continuum of breast health services.

Helpful information

Who needs a mammogram?

The American Cancer Society recommends all women age 40 or older have a mammogram once a year. Women at increased risk (for example, previous breast cancer, family history of breast cancer) should talk with their doctors about the benefits of starting mammography screening earlier or having more frequent exams.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography is the newest tool in breast cancer prevention. It is breakthrough technology that creates a 3D image that is clearer and more accurate. 3D technology takes multiple images of the entire breast, allowing our specialized breast radiologists to see through layers of tissue and examine areas of concern from all angles.

Benefits can include:

  • Earlier detection of small breast cancers
  • Offers greater accuracy in pinpointing the size, shape and location of abnormalities
  • Causes fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests
  • Creates clearer images of dense breast tissue

3D Insurance information

Not all insurance providers cover 3D mammography at this time. If you are not covered, you may be responsible for an the additional fee to the hospital. As with all imaging services, the radiologists interpreting your study will bill you separately. 3D mammography is FDA approved and covered under Medicare. The charge is payable through your healthcare savings account (HSA).
